I was pretty excited to hear about Colin Moock’s ActionScript 3.0: From the Ground Up Tour today because it coincided nicely with our posting in the Adobe Developer Center of two excerpts of his O’Reilly book, Essential ActionScript 3.0:

We chose two chapters to post in their entirety: Chapter 20, “Display API and the display list”, and Chapter 21, “Events and display hierarchies.” When I e-mailed Colin to let him know we’d gotten those chapters from O’Reilly to provide as free PDF downloads on our site, he replied: “Wow, those are two fantastic chapters to be offering for free.” He should know, so check them out!

As to his “From the Ground Up Tour,” this free one-day event is based on his book, and it covers that everything you need to get started programming in ActionScript 3.0. Topics include object-oriented programming, classes, objects, variables, methods, packages, conditionals, loops, operators, functions, error handling, event handling, display programming, compiling, and running programs. I’m told this seminar is targeted at Flash users with beginner to intermediate programming skills. Said the organizer: “Those completely new to ActionScript are welcome to attend, but may feel overwhelmed by the quantity of information in the course.”

To get more information on dates and locations, and registration, you can visit adobeas3tour.com. Looks like confirmed dates and locations so far include Oct. 27 in San Francisco, Nov. 5 in Los Angeles, and Nov. 12 in New York City.

By the way, if you’re interested in knowing more about Colin, check out this interview we did with him for the Adobe Developer Center last year as part of the tenth anniversary of Flash celebration.

Charles Nadeau, who is a documentation manager at Adobe, has written an easy-to-follow article that describes how to create UI mockups with Fireworks CS3.

The idea is what a neighborhood art gallery hires you to design and build a web application that contains a search page that finds artwork in the gallery’s database, an update page that lets gallery employees modify records in the database, and an insert page that lets employees add new artwork to the database. Your task is to create mockups of the pages and get feedback from the gallery managers.

Needless to say, Charles doesn’t guarantee that the fictional art gallery managers will be easy to work with.

Mayur Mundada, who works on the Fireworks team, has written a short article about his Export to Common Library extension, which helps you migrate your legacy Fireworks 8 (and earlier) libraries to the Fireworks CS3 Common Library.

As Alan Musselman wrote in his overview of Fireworks CS3, the Common Library solves one of the problems that design teams often encounter, which is not having a centralized location to store commonly used symbols. The Common Library makes it easy to store and access rich symbols, including button, graphic, and animation symbols, from a common location. Mayur’s extension brings all your old symbols into the new Fireworks.

Paul Robertson has written what I think you’ll agree is a useful article about deep-linking in Flash websites - a topic that comes up every so often in discussion forums. (He prefers the term “direct-link URLs.”) He’s an ActionScript developer/writer for the Platform Developer Documentation team at Adobe, and he’d e-mailed folks at work about living in the Bay Area, because he was moving there. I noticed his job title in his sig and checked out his blog to see what he’d been writing about.

And there was a blog posting about “deep-linking” to different frames/states in a Flash application. What’s cool about this new article is that he’s improved it by incorporating some feedback that readers provided in response to the original.

Paul is a good writer - with an informative blog - and he’s working on another article for the Flash Developer Center. I’ll blog about it when we post it - probably next month after MAX.

He had an idea for an article: how to roll your own social media application in just a few steps. He basically wanted to call it “YouTube in a box,” but - you know, YouTube might not have liked that - so we ended up calling it Creating a video sharing web application using Flex 2 and Flash Media Server 2.

We just posted in the Flash Media Server Developer Center. The article provides you with the foundation skills to build it. Perhaps it’ll inspire you to build your own video sharing site.

His article, Exploring the Demo Current Document command in Fireworks CS3, explains how to make it work - and even provides complete source code so you can customize the presentation command even further in Adobe Flash CS3 Professional.

Viktor Goltvyanitsa is a graphic designer and Flash developer in Zaporozhye, Ukraine. Fireworks experts, it would appear, live truly around the world.
